The Three Laws of Performance
This book – by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan – deals with the vexed question of why attempts to change and fix things so rarely work.
But on a more empowering note, it reveals the secret of re-writing our future in a positive and powerful way.
The book is primarily written from the perspective of business consulting, illustrated by case studies of breakthrough results that the authors produced for their consultancy clients. It has even been described by Leadership expert, Warren Bennis, as:
“Perhaps the most significant business book written in the last forty years” -
However it goes way beyond that. The three laws of performance that they present in the book, and the methodologies that they teach to leverage them, apply to organisations of all sorts – not just businesses.
Furthermore, these principles apply at an individual level, and also to the entire global situation.
The book is written to make a difference in the lives of the people who read it. Even without further specific training or consulting, the methodologies it describes are made available from merely reading it.
It brings alive the term “transformation”. This is a word which is bandied around by many people, but few of them really understand what they mean by it.
The starting point is that the performance of an individual or team depends on the way the world occurs to them. (This is the First Law). That’s all very well, but how can we shift that? The answer to that lies in the Second and Third Laws.
What makes a difference is to realise that you have a say in the way the world occurs. We all bring our own interpretations to what we see as “reality”. When this is grasped, whole new levels of energy and effectiveness are available.
Virtually all of the discussion in the media about the current state of the world is based on the past. The default future people are expecting, whether they admit it or not, is a reflection of that. People are living into a future of fear and threat which diminishes energy, vitality and effectiveness. By creating a new future, we can empower how we think, feel and behave right now.
The leaders who are emerging at this critical time in history are those who can create powerful visions of a future to live for.
Here’s a really great 10 minute video interview with one of the authors. It will give you an insight into the sort of distinctions that he reveals in the book.
